BEIRUT MARATHON ASSOCIATION

The Beirut Marathon Association (BMA) is a non-profit non-governmental organization registered under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. BMA was founded in August 2002 with the purpose of organizing the annual Beirut International Marathon in Lebanon. The Beirut International Marathon (BIM) is an annual event. The first ever BIM was held on October 19, 2003 and attracted over 6,000 runners from 49 different countries and tens of thousands of spectators in Lebanon and around the world. These numbers doubled in the 2004 Beirut International Marathon. In addition to promoting running, health, and personal achievement, the BIM also has a humanitarian dimension that aims at making a difference in other people's lives through sports.

By 2020, BMA will be a leading global expert running organization, attracting international runners, developing national talent up to Olympic standard, and organizing world-class running events.

AFPA's story with BMA

In November 2011, Agonistik for performing arts (AFPA) took it to the streets alongside countless Lebanese NGOs in the Blom Beirut Marathon 2011. This was the first event of its kind that our association participated in. AFPA co- founders and members did not only participate by running in the marathon but also volunteered at the EXPO Beirut marathon exhibition ensuring the work was impeccable and the hosts satisfied.

AFPA also had a presentation of their own, an excerpt of the Darawish scene from the production of “Post-Fight Dissonances” directed by Nagy Souraty. This performance took place during the “Rock & Run” Friday night party, which attracted a great audience. Our very own Rami Cavalo Eid then had a solo Capoeira performance.

The "fun run race" took place on Sunday November 27th at 9 am. AFPA members were out on the streets preparing for this novelty of an experience! Some stretched, others found caffeine and most took a power nap! There was an estimated 23,000 other runners in this 10 km fun race.

This experience with BMA was one AFPA members will never forget as it engaged our bodies, minds and hearts. AFPA appreciates and thanks all the participants and friends who ran with and for the association. It was the combination of all of them and their collective efforts and energies that made the experience a very special one!

To make AFPA's relationship with BMA even more special - it was a great surprise to learn songwriter and performer Mike Massy collaborated with BMA and released this motivational song below! Mike Massy is collaborating with the Didaskalos and AFPA during MISHKAL: a youth festival for all arts at Al Madina Theatre. Mike Massy will be the opening performance on Monday 17 September at 9.00pm! Check out our program for more information!
