MISHKALfestival 2012 ARTworks - ANIMATED INSTALLATIONS

PHOTOS by Alaa Halabi Hakim

This personalized steel creation is not just a prop but also a very diverse spectacle in itself. Albert Hoffman’s Bicycle Trip – the first recorded LSD hallucination, inspired me, as I wanted to create a visually provoking world on stage. While the bicycle was an integral element of the play I directed, “Victoria Station”, it remains a piece of art that can stand alone and be defined with the unlimited creativity it inspires - Alia J.S.

This puppet is an old king, the protagonist in the play I directed “Exit The King”. It is a huge structure that is hollow and made of bamboo. It was important that I use this material as it looks raw and symbolizes the dying character the puppet is portraying. I was inspired by the Broadway production of “War Horse” that used a life size bamboo horse puppet - Caroline Audi

NAGY SOURATY OPENING CEREMONY SPEECH @MISHKALfestival 2012

17.09.2012

Excerpts from Nagy Souraty's speech during the opening ceremony of MISHKAL: a youth festival for all arts at al Madina Theatre.

LEBANESE PARKOUR TEAM

Parkour is a movement philosophy also known as "the art of displacement" .It is all about moving from point A to point B with minimum energy consumption. To those who are dedicated to Parkour it is a discipline.

Parkour is a discipline that melds elements of martial arts and gymnastics in which practitioners move along a route, typically in an urban environment, trying to overcome obstacles in the quickest and most efficient manner possible through a combination of jumping, climbing and running.

Joe Zgheib founded and established the Lebanese Parkour Team in 2010;  a small collective of around 40 male and female thrill-seekers between the ages of 7 and 25 who are united by a quest to test their physical limits. Training sessions lasting an hour and a half are held in the L’Institut Technique des Freres in Gemmayzeh four days a week. Two sessions a week cost $40 a person. LPK began new training sessions in Jbeil city every Tuesday and Thursday. For more information contact the LPK on info@lebaneseparkour.com or call 03119732.

“The earth is our playground, whether I’m at home, in a parking lot in Beirut, among the ruins of Jbeil, or in the valleys of the Bekaa. Our discipline is not defined by location – it’s everywhere, it’s a way of life,” explains Zgheib, 23, a graduate of the University of Balamand with a degree in Physical Education. “At first, we had a bad rep ... people referred to us as monkeys, and said we were crazy – telling us we would hurt ourselves. Seeing us in action was a shock to them.” he continues.

Parkour shares the same discipline as Theatre of the Edge in both a literal and metaphorical manner. Stay tuned to find out when you can witness the explosive collaboration between the LPK and AFPA during MISHKAL: a youth festival for all arts in Al Madina Theatre.

Cavalo Champion of Lebanon
