THE WORD OF THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE

The concept and breath that has become MISHKAL festival is ideal for young aspiring directors, thespians, artists and filmmakers to meet and work together. To even have the chance to be associated with a theatre such as Al Madina Theatre is enough motivation to get people involved enthusiastically. With this spirit the MISHKAL organizing team has been dedicated to making this experience as fulfilling for the audience members and participants as it has been for us. 

Why MISHKAL?

The initiative for young artists to showcase their work on a large scale is a far fetched idea, but one that is desperately yearned for. Al Madina Theatre’s identity has always been associated with encouraging the youth in terms of art and culture. 
It is this reason that gave the MISHKAL team the opportunity to execute a youth festival for all arts. 

The team is composed of young art students and like the participants of the festival, has the urge to share their work had it been with an audience or contemporaries and professionals. It is important to note the achievement status of showcasing young artists’ work in a non-academic platform but rather in the heart of Beirut city. 

With a high profile cultural hub like Al Madina Theatre and a dedicated team the initial vision of MISHKAL festival was already a successful one but the reality surpassed all expectations. The MISHKAL festival committee received over 160 applications and the final selection is one we are very proud of. It was an overwhelming experience to see the board members of Al Madina Theatre impressed by the work of our generation – whether we knew the artists or not, it was our youth that has created such high quality work. 

It is our hope and aim that the work presented at MISHKAL: a youth festival for all arts is adopted by other platforms and not only in the domain of arts. With the utmost gratitude towards the European Union in Lebanon, the Ministries of Culture, Education, and Tourism, as well as the Municipality of Beirut, we believe our collaboration will generate much more support in the future editions of MISHKAL festival at Al Madina Theatre. In light of the spirit of MISHKAL and the privilege of showcasing the youth’s work, it is our hope that other students and recent graduates find their professional platform to experiment on, creating a greater innovative atmosphere in Beirut that could grow and be explored on an international standard.
